Gutter care in Palmetto Dunes depends on whether the house faces the beach, a fairway or a lagoon, but salt reaches all of them. A&A Island Services has 20+ years on Lowcountry gutters, and the owner is at every job, even when you are away.
Salt, Sand and Lagoons: Gutter Work in Palmetto Dunes
Palmetto Dunes is largely a rental community. The PDPOA counts 1,241 villas and 932 homes or lots, and reports that 53 percent of owners hold their property as an investment or rental, against 16 percent who live there full time. Building began in 1967; Water Oak and Beach Villas were finished in 1971, and Inverness Village and The Moorings in 1976. Shelter Cove, across Highway 278, grew from marina work that began in 1980 and is run by its own homeowner associations.
Salt is the steady problem. FEMA's Technical Bulletin 8 cites Kure Beach, North Carolina tests in which corrosion near the shoreline peaked about 12 feet above the ground, and it notes that surfaces staying damp longer corrode faster. Sand blown into a trough holds salty moisture against the metal, so beach-row gutters need flushing even with no trees overhead.
The lagoons shape the job as well. The PDPOA describes its 11-mile system as tidal and brackish, doubling as stormwater storage, and asks residents not to blow clippings or debris into it. Its rules for landscapers and yard crews also require debris to be covered when it leaves through the gates. For guard options island-wide, see gutter guards on Hilton Head Island.
